An unusual itinerary in Verona
Undiscovered Verona is an experience out of the touristic routes. Here is a half day tour to discover the area on the left side of the Adige river.
An archaeological site
Undiscovered Verona starts near Ponte Pietra, the Roman bridge and continues with the visit of the archaeological area of the Roman Theatre, I century bC., with the renewed archaeological museum. I’s the area where the first inhabitants lived before the Roman colonization.
The Cathedral complex
Nearby are some marvellous religious complex as the three churches of the Cathedral: Santa Maria, Sant’Elena and the Baptistery of San Giovanni in Fonte. A few remains of the mosaic floor of two paleo Christian basilica are visible in Sant’Elena church.
From the Middle Ages
is the splendid gothic church of Santa Anastasia. Across the Adige river the renaissance church of San Giorgio with the “St. George’s martyrdom” by Paolo Veronese. San Giovanni in Valle, a marvellous example of romanesque building, XII century.
The Renaissance
And Santa Maria in Organo, a true unicum of the Veronese Renaissance. This church has a superb intarsia chansel and vestry which are the work of architectfriar Fra Giovanni da Verona. The vestry is a large rectangular room where the walls were frescoed with images of Olivetans monks, as they committed the work. Here Fra Giovanni left left one of his masterpieces, the pannels of the wardrobes. The wood work was completed in 1523.
A beautiful garden
Undiscovered Verona covers also Giardino Giusti. Created towards the end of the 15th century, renewed in the 16th century it lays on a slope behind the Giusti palace. The gardens have manteined the aspect and characteristics of the past: fountains, grottos,Italian edges, mythological staues, a labirinth,…
Following a predeterminated path we’ll climb uphill from where you’ll enjoy a wonderful view over Verona. Visited and celebratedby illustrious figures as Cosimo de’ Medici, Goethe, Mozart,…the Giusti Gardens are a urban complex of great interest and beauty.
