Vicenza

Why choose this Tour

Vicenza, the city of Palladio, is a must-see destination for those who love art, architecture and history. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994, this Venetian city boasts a unique historic center, shaped by the genius of Andrea Palladio, one of the greatest architects of all time.

Almost every corner of Vicenza bears the signature of Palladio. Among his masterpieces are the Basilica Palladiana, the Teatro Olimpico, Palazzo Chiericati and the famous Villa Rotonda, works that have left a lasting imprint on world architecture.

In addition to Palladio's creations, Vicenza offers other elements of great charm, such as the Roman influence on the urban structure, the harmonious combination of centuries-old streets, bridges over waterways and picturesque squares.

Tour details

Historic center and Palladian architecture

The first part of the visit is dedicated to the historic center, where you can admire the sumptuous private and public palaces commissioned to Palladio by the most influential families of Renaissance Vicenza. In total, the city is home to 23 Palladian palaces.

Along the ancient Roman decumanus, the main artery of the city, there are splendid examples of Palladian architecture. In Piazza dei Signori stands the Palladian Basilica, built in white stone and characterized by solemn elegance. On the ground floor of the Basilica there are numerous jewelers, testimony of the importance of the Vicenza goldsmith tradition. Since 2014, the building has also housed the Jewelry Museum.

At the end of Corso Palladio is Palazzo Chiericati, now home to a museum dedicated to Vicenza's culture and civilization. Next to it stands the Teatro Olimpico, Palladio's last great work, commissioned by the members of the Accademia Olimpica. It is the first covered theater in the world, characterized by classical scenery. After the architect's death, the works were completed by Vincenzo Scamozzi.

The first part of the visit ends with the Olympic Theater, symbol of Vicenza and part of the UNESCO heritage.

Palladian villas around Vicenza

To complete the Palladian itinerary, you can visit two Venetian villas located on the hills surrounding Vicenza.

  • Villa Valmarana: Open every day, it is located in the picturesque Valle del Silenzio. Still owned by the Valmarana family, it is famous for the frescoes painted by Giambattista and Giandomenico Tiepolo, father and son.
  • Villa Capra, known as La Rotonda: Considered one of the most famous and imitated architectural masterpieces of all time. The villa has four identical facades and integrates perfectly with the surrounding landscape. It is only open on certain days of the week.
