Tour details
The Verona Arena was built in the first half of the 1st century AD, just outside the city walls. With a capacity of about 30,000 spectators, it hosted exciting shows such as gladiator duels, hunts, and executions.
Since the Middle Ages, the amphitheater has been the scene of tournaments, jousts, carousels, sports competitions and theatrical performances, keeping its spirit of entertainment alive.
Building parts
The amphitheater has an elliptical shape and originally consisted of four rings and three galleries. The outer ring, made entirely of stone, is only partially visible today: four arches known by the Veronese as the Wing remain.
Today the capacity is about 22,000 spectators. In addition to the cavea, the podium and the arena itself, the ambulatories and corridors also offer extraordinary archaeological interest.
The supporting structures are made of concrete, rubble and Verona stone, while the exterior is covered in the characteristic local pink stone. This makes the Verona Arena one of the largest amphitheaters and, without a doubt, the best preserved in the world.
The Arena today
Since 1913, the amphitheater has hosted a prestigious opera festival every summer, with around 50 performances on the bill. "Aida" was the first opera performed and, even today, it is a regular fixture on the program, with occasional evenings dedicated to the historic 1913 edition.
In addition to opera, the Arena is also a stage for modern music concerts, welcoming internationally renowned artists.
