The thermal waters of Sirmione

This area is famous for its thermal spring, a treasure known since Roman times. Its waters, famous for their healing properties, make Sirmione a renowned spa resort, just like in the times of the Roman Empire.

Tour details

Ancient Sirmione is spread over three main areas:

  • The hill of Cortine
  • The hill of San Pietro in Mavino
  • The archaeological area of the Grotte di Catullo

Guided Tour Itinerary

The tour begins in Piazza Castello, at the 13th-century Rocca Scaligera. This medieval fortress, entirely surrounded by water, has two bridges that connect it to the mainland.

Continue towards the archaeological site of the Grotte di Catullo, an area that covers 20,000 square meters. Although there is no certain evidence of its link with the poet Gaius Valerius Catullus, this Roman complex is one of the most important archaeological sites in northern Italy. Its ruins overlooking the lake create a suggestive scenario.

The name "Grotte di Catullo" dates back to a misinterpretation by some 15th-century travelers, who mistook the ruins covered by vegetation for natural caves. Popular tradition then associated the site with the villa that belonged to the poet Catullo, although there is no historical confirmation.

From the ruins you can admire a splendid panorama of Lake Garda. Continuing on, a short walk leads to the church of San Pietro in Mavino, dating back to the eighth century and decorated with frescoes of great interest.

The tour continues through the narrow streets of the historic center and ends in Piazza Carducci, the ancient port, where you can stop in one of the bars for an aperitif or an ice cream. Walking through the streets of the village is a unique experience: the colorful houses, the craft shops and the small squares create an authentic and timeless atmosphere.
