Malcesine

Malcesine, a medieval gem on Lake Garda

Malcesine is a perfectly preserved medieval village, located as a guard to the northernmost part of Lake Garda. Getting lost in the ups and downs of its cobbled streets is a unique pleasure. The views offered by this lakeside village are truly unforgettable.

Take a full day, leave early: you may not be able to see everything if you arrive late.

The marina alone is worth a stop. It's a little enchanting. Stop for a coffee and then head along the only street that leads to the oldest part of the village.

The Palace of the Captains

Among the historic buildings, it is worth entering the courtyard of the Palazzo dei Capitani. The first complex dates back to the time of the Scaligeri, the lords who hosted Dante in Verona for almost eight years.

The Serenissima Republic of Venice transformed the palace into the residence of the Captain of the Lake. Overlooking the water, it is free to access: from its elegant garden you can enjoy a spectacular view of the opposite shore of the lake.

The Scaliger Castle

Continuing through the alleys, follow the signs for the castle. They will lead you through ancient gates and walls to the manor.

Over the past twenty years, the castle has become one of the most sought-after locations for civil weddings: it is necessary to book well in advance. The view is truly breathtaking.

Climb the tallest tower: from there you can admire the entire north and south-west part of the lake.

Also worth a visit are the exhibition rooms, which tell the natural history of Monte Baldo and Lake Garda.

Goethe to Malcesine

One of the rooms is dedicated to Goethe, who stopped here on September 13, 1786, during his trip to Italy. He had stopped to sketch the castle, but was mistaken for a spy. So he wrote:

"The contrary wind that pushed me yesterday into the port of Malsesine gave me an unpleasant adventure, which I endured in good spirits, and which, in the end, left me with a memory that was not at all unpleasant..."

Monte Baldo

After visiting the village, you can end the day by taking the cable car up Monte Baldo. The experience will not disappoint: from the top, the panoramic view of the lake and the surrounding mountains is breathtaking.
