Lazise, fortified village of Garda

A day in Lazise, the fortified village of Garda

A visit to Lazise never disappoints! This charming fortified village is the first you come across on the eastern shore of Lake Garda when arriving from Verona. Here, nature, art, history and water come together to create a truly enchanting place. Lazise is just one of the pearls of the lake, but undoubtedly one of the most fascinating.

A landscape shaped by time

The territory of Lazise extends entirely within the vast Morainic amphitheater of Garda. The rolling hills that surround it are the result of ancient sedimentary deposits left by glaciations, in particular by the Riss and Wurm glaciations, which occurred in the Quaternary period.

The first settlements

The first traces of human settlements in the area date back to the Bronze Age, when villages on stilts developed here. Later, in Roman times, the lake – then called Benacus – became a strategic point for trade and the transit of people and goods.

In 983, the community of Lazise obtained permission from Emperor Otto II to build a fortification to defend the village.

The current castle, with its imposing, perfectly preserved walls and three access gates, was built during the period of Scaliger rule.

The Customs House: history of a symbolic building

During the period of the Serenissima Republic of Venice, Lazise was endowed with a building destined for a fundamental role: the Customs House.

Originally built as an arsenal in 1329, it was later transformed into a customs house for goods. Today, after careful restoration, it hosts cultural events and exhibitions.

A few steps from the Customs House is the church of San Nicolò, built in the 12th century by the guild of the Originals of Lazise.

San Nicolò is the protector of sailors and waters. During the restoration of the church, valuable frescoes were brought to light, including the Madonna del Latte, the Madonna del Popolo and a triptych that has unfortunately been lost. The church is generally always open to visitors.

Lazise today: between tourism and tradition

Today Lazise is one of the most renowned tourist resorts on Lake Garda.

Strolling through its picturesque streets or along the picturesque lakeside, you will find welcoming hotels, restaurants, cafes and elegant shops.

If you're looking for a different experience, near the church of San Nicolò is the pier, the starting point for numerous boat itineraries.

Es gibt nur einen kleinen Hinweis: Ein Tag in Lazise, einem befestigten Dorf am Gardasee, könnte nicht ausreichen... und leicht zu zwei Tagen werden!
