An imposing medieval fortress
The Castle of Soave is a typical example of medieval military architecture. Located on Monte Tenda, it dominates the village below and the surrounding plain. The entire complex covers an area of about 5,800 m² and is characterized by an imposing central keep, surrounded by high walls and three courtyards of different sizes and levels.
The defensive walls, starting from the castle, descend to surround the entire medieval village, creating a striking panorama.
The origins of the castle
The origins of Scaliger Castle date back to the High Middle Ages, with the fortress built over the ruins of an ancient Roman fortress. According to 10th-century documents and a deed of Frederick Barbarossa, the fortress initially belonged to the Sambonifacio Counts.
The castle acquired greater importance with the domination of the Scaligeri, who transformed it into a real strategic military fortress.
- The Lords of La Scala restored and enlarged the castle, giving it its present appearance.
- In 1379, Cansignorio della Scala completed the defensive walls, making the structure even more imposing.
- In 1405 the castle came under the control of the Serenissima Republic of Venice.
- In 1830 it became the property of the Camuzzoni family by inheritance.
The building: rooms and walkways
Next to the keep, there is the residence of the lord or his representative. The following are preserved inside:
- A genealogical parchment of the Scala family
- Medieval iron weapons
- Period furniture
- A dining room and a bedroom
A narrow staircase leads up to the round walkways, from which you can enjoy a spectacular view of the surrounding vineyards.
The medieval village of Soave
In addition to the Scaliger Castle, the village of Soave preserves numerous historic buildings:
- Palace of the Counts Sambonifacio and Town Hall (13th century)
- Palazzo Cavalli, in Gothic-Venetian style, with original frescoes
- Santa Maria dei Domenicani, with frescoes depicting the Stories of San Lazzaro
- Medieval church of San Giorgio, restored and can be visited outside the walls
A few kilometers from Soave is the Villanova Abbey, built in the 8th century along the Via Postumia.
- In the 12th century it was restored and today preserves frescoes of the Giottesque school.
- The 8th-century crypt is one of its most evocative treasures.
