Soave
Why choose this Tour
Soave, a jewel nestled in the Veronese hills, is an unmissable destination for those who want to immerse themselves in a medieval atmosphere and discover a perfectly preserved village.
Soave presents itself to the visitor as a fortified city, dominated by a mighty castle and entirely surrounded by crenellated walls and massive towers. In addition to its historical charm, it is a renowned wine center, famous all over the world for its classic white wine. Wine tasting is highly recommended and can be done in a wine shop in the city or in one of the many wineries in the area.
Located at the foot of the Lessini Mountains, about 30 kilometers from Verona, Soave has ancient origins. The first human settlements date back to the Stone Age and in Roman times there was a small town along the Via Postumia. The current old town was founded in the Lombard era by a tribe of Nordic origin, attracted by the geographical position, the climate and the natural beauty of the place.
Today Soave is a city rich in history, with elegant palaces and a well-preserved castle that can be visited.

The Castle of Soave
The castle can be reached in two ways:
- Within walking distance of the historic center
- By car or bus from the road that passes behind the town
Overlooking the village, Scaliger Castle is the symbol of Soave. Its walls and towers offer a spectacular view of the valley and the historic center.
Built on Roman remains, the castle has been rebuilt several times over the centuries. The most important restoration was that of Cansignorio della Scala in 1369. The structure includes walkable walls, three courtyards, the remains of a sacred building, the residence of the lord and a tower. From the watchtower you can enjoy an incomparable view of the hills, mountains and surrounding plain.
The Scaliger walls and the city gates
The walls of Soave, built under the rule of the Della Scala family, completely surround the village and have three access gates to the historic center:
- Porta Aquila to the north
- Vicenza Gate to the east
- Porta Verona to the south, the main entrance, with convenient parking nearby for cars and coaches
The palaces of Soave
Palazzo di Giustizia: located in the city center, it was built in 1375 by order of Cansignorio della Scala. Characterized by a loggia and ogival windows, it was the seat of the rector, the governor and the magistrate.
Palazzo Cavalli: built in 1411 by Nicolò Cavalli, is a fine example of Venetian Gothic architecture.
Palazzo Scaligero: residence of the captains during the Venetian period, today houses the town hall of Soave. Next to it there is a beautiful park, donated to the city by the Zanella family.
The sacred buildings
Between the 11th and 16th centuries numerous churches were built, thanks to the presence of important religious orders such as the Dominicans and the Franciscans. Of particular interest are:
- Basilica of Santa Maria dei Domenicani
- San Giorgio
- La Bassanella
- La chiesa parrocchiale
