Roman Verona
Why choose this Tour
Verona is one of the cities in northern Italy with the greatest number of Roman remains. If you are fascinated by the Roman world, this tour is for you. The city was already a thriving Roman colony in the early centuries BC, with an area of about 440,000 m² within the city walls.
Verona was and still is the nerve center of the northeast and a very important crossroads. Three consular roads crossed Verona:
- Via Postumia (147 BC)
- Via Gallica
- Via Claudia Augusta
Verona was included by Caesar in the 10th Regio "Veneto et Histria" and became the "little Cisalpine Rome" .
Thanks to the quantity and quality of the remains found in the city, Verona can be compared to a small Rome. In addition to the guided tour, you can visit the archaeological museum and the lapidary on your own. Your guide will be able to advise you.

Verona, Roman colony and city
The itinerary includes the most important points of ancient Verona, which became a Roman municipality around 49 BC. The plan of the Roman city has the appearance of a geometric grid formed by insulae arranged along roads parallel to the Decumanus Maximus and the Cardo Maximus.
The visit can start from the Arch of Gavi, continuing along the ancient Via Postumia, passing through the Porta Borsari, bypassing visible stretches of the Roman walls, crossing a door at the exit of the first decumanus dextratum and finally reaching the amphitheater of the 1st century AD, known as the Arena.
The Arena owes its name to the sand (harena in Latin) that covered the floor on which the shows took place. With its elliptical plan, it could accommodate about 30,000 spectators.
We highly recommend a visit to this monument, the best preserved of its kind in the world.
Other points of interest
But Verona is not just the Arena. During the tour you will also discover:
- Roman Theater, overlooking the Adige.
- Arc of Triumph of the Gavi family, symbol of Roman prestige.
- Porta Borsari and Porta Leoni, ancient gateways to the city.
- Traces of the domus, with beautiful mosaics.
Piazza delle Erbe: the ancient Forum
Today's Piazza delle Erbe was once the Forum, the political and religious center of Roman Verona. Here, for over two thousand years, a colorful market of fruit, vegetables and souvenirs has been held.
Today the square is surrounded by medieval buildings, frescoed houses and Renaissance towers, witnesses of the city's long history. The tour ends at the Pietra Bridge, the striking Roman bridge that overlooks the remains of the Roman Theater.
