Why choose this tour

Verona is one of the cities in Northern Italy with the most Roman remains. If you are fascinated by the Roman world, this is the tour for you. The city was already a flourishing Roman colony in the first centuries BC, with an area of around 440,000 m² within the city walls. Verona was, and still is, the nerve centre of the north-east and a very important crossroads. Three consular roads passed through Verona: the Postumia (147 BC), the Gallica and the Claudia Augusta.
Verona was included by Caesar in the X Regio ‘Veneto and Histria’ and became the ‘little Rome of the Cisalpine’.
Thanks to the quantity and quality of the remains found in the city, we can compare Verona to a small Rome. In addition to the guided tour, you can visit the Archaeological Museum and the Lapidarium on your own. Your guide will be able to advise you. Book your private visit!

Details

Verona, colony and Roman city
The itinerary includes the most important points of ancient Verona, which became a Roman municipality around 49 BC. The plan of the Roman city has the appearance of a geometrical grid formed by “insulae” arranged along streets that run parallel to the Decumanus and the Cardo Massimo.
It is possible to begin the visit of Roman Verona from the Gavi Arch by continuing along the ancient Via Postumia, passing through the Porta dei Borsari, skirting visible stretches of the Roman walls, passing through a gateway at the exit of the first Decumanus dextratum and finally reaching the Amphitheatre 1st century A.D. It is also called the Arena, from the Latin name of the sand that covered the stalls where the various performances took place. It has an elliptical plan and could seat about 30,000 spectators. A visit inside this monument, the best preserved of its kind in the world, is highly recommended.
But Verona also boasts a majestic Roman theatre, a Triumphal Arch of the Gavi family and two Roman gates: Porta Borsari and Porta Leoni. Finally, traces of the ancient city can be seen everywhere: excavations have reveiled the mosaics of the ‘domus’, the Roman houses.
Today’s Piazza delle Erbe was once the Forum, the political and religious centre of the ancient city. Today, in this square, where a colourful market of fruit, vegetables and souvenirs has been held for two thousand years, you can admire medieval and Renaissance buildings, frescoed houses and medieval towers.
The tour of Roman Verona continues and ends at the Ponte Pietra, the Roman Bridge, in front of the remains of the Roman Theatre. Book your private tour!
